This report is a revised version of Joseph Tiffany’s 1978 dissertation for the Department of Anthropology of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It repesents a detailed analysis of excavations at the Chan-ya-ta Site (13BV1), one of twenty-one Mill Creek sites recorded in the Little Sioux River valley. Chan-ya-ta was selected for excavation because it was a single component Mill Creek site which was thought to have characteristics making it suitable for studying the community patterns of a Mill Creek village. Tiffany integrates archaeological and environmental data into a settlement model for the Mill Creek culture. The discussion also examines the chronology of the Mill Creek Culture and its relationship to Great Oasis and other Late Prehistoric developments in the region.

“. . . an excellent overview of the Mill Creek culture of northwestern Iowa . . . . It is challenging, combining a good review of Mill Creek culture history and intriguing hypothesis-testing.”
